From my very first visit to Maine in 1979, I immediately fell in love with this beautiful state. After living and raising our family of five daughters in northern Maine for sixteen years, my wife Rebecca and I (Mark) moved to the coast of southern Maine in 2009. Beccy grew up in southern Maine and so for her it was coming home.
Together we quickly got involved in our community where we continue to work, volunteer and recreate. We love the people, landscape, culture and way of life here in the Wells and Kennebunk area. We see our lives here as an expression of God’s love for us. We have experienced over the years God’s faithfulness, love and grace in both our personal lives and in 30 years of Christian ministry. Being renewed in our desire to be obedient to the Great Commission (Matthew 28: 19-20), we made a decision in 2014 to be intentional with sharing the good news of God’s love and to do so within the context of community or family. While our sending mission organization is NAMB, we have also partnered with the SOMA family of churches for the purpose of planting a missional church.
Soma churches agree that a Missional Community is the best structure and environment for disciple-making.
Rooted in the belief that the CHURCH is God’s chosen FAMILY, made up of Jesus’ SERVANTS sent by the Holy Spirit as MISSIONARIES, we have acted upon God’s call to make disciples as He enables. It starts with what we call Missional Communities right where we live here in the southern region of Maine and initially in the Wells, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel region.
We must realize that Jesus commanded every one of his followers to GO and MAKE disciples who make disciples. A Gospel-centered missional church doesn’t first ask the question, “What works best?” Instead, it asks, “How do we fulfill the mission of Jesus to make disciples who believe and live out the Gospel by displaying and declaring who God is and what He has done in and through Jesus Christ, teaching and training others to do so as well.
Beccy and I and the leadership team have answered that question by personally choosing to live out the mission of God together (Missionaries) with others of like-mindedness in the specific area we live in (Southern Maine) by demonstrating the gospel in tangible forms (Servants) and declaring the gospel to others in the rhythms of every day life — both to those who believe it and those who are being exposed to it (Learners). We see Missional Communities as the primary means through which real life mobilizes people together on mission by connecting them to their community through the gospel-focused way.
Jesus said he would build his Church. So as we are faithful in sharing the gospel and living life together on mission with those he gathers to join with us, we believe his local Church in southern Maine will be established in his time and for his glory.
